Spottswoode: A family estate in Napa
Spottswoode Cabernet, from Napa Valley, stands out for its focused gentility and the soft determination of the women in charge of it.

Spottswoode is an historic winegrowing estate located on the western edge of the Napa Valley. The 46-acre estate was established in 1882 by George Schonewald, and it has been owned by the Novak family since 1972, who made the first Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982. Today Beth and Lindy Novak work for the family winery and produce a wine known for its refined elegance, balance, and classic structure. Pluris has met Beth Novak Milliken, President & CEO, to better understand what makes Spottswoode so special

Pluris - What is unique about Spottswoode and its wines?

Beth Novak Milliken - Our cabernet is the wine of a place, a true estate wine that honors its grape origins. We were among the first to introduce organic farming practices in our vineyard in 1985. It is certified organic by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF).

Californian wines are generally considered to be more appealing, easy to access than French and European wines. What's your point of view?

In Napa Valley we enjoy a wonderful Mediterranean climate influenced by fog from the Pacific Ocean. With little to no rain between June and October and cool morning fog, most of our days during the growing season begin at roughly 50 Fahrenheit and reaches 80-90 in the afternoon. This allows for ripeness to develop while keeping the acids intact. Sun management is our issue, whereas in Bordeaux annual grape ripeness cannot be assumed. We need to balance the warmth and sunshine with the strong influence of the fog.

What shapes specifically your approach to winemaking ?

When we produced our first cabernet in 1982, we initially looked to Bordeaux for inspiration seeking the balance, grace, structure and beauty of their best wines. Though our vineyard has been entirely replanted since the 1970s, we have retained our commitment to crafting a wine that represents the very best our estate can provide annually. We pick when fruit is ripe, not over ripe, and beautifully intact. We use 60-70% new French oak each year - we want the oak to be a component of the wine rather than a dominant force. And we do all we can to let our fruit fully express itself as wine in the bottle. We bring the same sensibility of structure, elegance and balance to our Sauvignon Blanc, the grapes of which are sourced from our estate and other family vineyards in both Sonoma and Napa counties.

More about the wines:

Three very special wines are released each year: Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc, and recently-introduced Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon.
